Lilly Foster Eardley is a Midlands-based multidisciplinary artist working across animation, sculpture, and installation. Blurring lines between humans and animals, her works tells stories that reflect the unequal dynamics of contemporary British society, particularly in relation to class, species, and cultural symbolism. She often draws from her own experiences of class relations, prejudice, and feelings of being an outsider to inform her work.
With a focus on marginalised animals found in the UK, including rats, pigeons, insects and worms, Lilly is interested in challenging common perceptions of these species through her storytelling, and imagines possible futures. Equally she is interested in animals that have been elevated through symbolism and superstition, including magpies and butterflies. Inspired by the filmmaking process, and using materials common to the filmmaking industry, Lilly approaches her practice as a form of ongoing worldbuilding. Using needle felted wool, foam clay, and stuffing she creates oversized sculptural animals, which can be manipulated and animated, and places them in different scenes to bring the characters to life. Anthropomorphisation is used intentionally as an empathetic tool, encouraging viewers to see themselves in the playful vignettes. Lilly does not view each piece as separate, but rather characters in a story or set of characters that contribute to a world and slip between worlds.
